Sustainability Reporting

We are excited to announce the formation of a dedicated working group focused on the upcoming sustainability reporting standards. This initiative reflects our commitment to staying at the forefront of sustainability practices and ensuring that our members are at the forefront of emerging regulations. The working group’s primary mission will be to gather, analyze, and disseminate information regarding new and evolving standards in sustainability reporting, with a particular focus on what this means for Belgian companies. Stay tuned for updates and insights from this dynamic team as we navigate the evolving landscape of sustainability together.

Annual accounts and the Central Balance Sheet Office

The National Bank of Belgium’s Central Balance Sheet Office collects and handles the annual accounts of nearly all legal entities active in Belgium and makes these accounts available for the public, in XBRL format. The full history of taxonomies is available at this page.

Banking and Insurance supervision

The standard is widely used throughout Europe for Banking and Insurance supervision.

Regulation and supervision are gradually centralised on the European level, first with the creation of European Supervisory Authorities (ESA) such as the European Banking Authority (EBA) and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA) and subsequently with the setup of the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM) and Single Resolution Board (SRB).

These European authorities have issued XBRL frameworks for the regular collection of supervisory data, where the use of the XBRL standard is mandatory to report from National Competent Authority (NCA) to ESA, and where the taxonomies are gently offered to be used by NCA for their own data collection purposes.

The National Bank of Belgium, in its role as NCA for the Belgian banking and insurance sector, has adopted these XBRL taxonomies as sole digital format for entities to use in the context of supervisory reporting:
